Ootmarsum: experience historyTradition has it that Ootmarsum was founded by the Frankish general Othmar in 126 AD. The settlement carried his name, Othmarsheim, which later became Ootmarsum. Through the centuries Othmarsheim developed into the ecclesiastical centre of the region. Around 1000 AD Ootmarsum was also an important trade centre, as it was situated at a junction of busy trade and postal routes. Guilds ware prospering and around 1300 AD Ootmarsum received city rights. Since those days the street pattern hasn’t changed at all. So that a walk through the historic centre will lead you along the original layout of the town’s walls and canals. Its adminitrative importance was underlined by the establishment of the Epscopal Meijerhof and the decision of the German Oder to found a Commanderie in Ootmarsum. As the industrial revolution never reached this medieval town, it was not connected to other towns by means of railways or canals, which accounts for the preservation of its original appearance. |
